{"id":2469,"date":"2013-07-14T13:08:03","date_gmt":"2013-07-14T04:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rescuejapan.jp\/_wp\/?p=2469"},"modified":"2013-07-14T13:08:03","modified_gmt":"2013-07-14T04:08:03","slug":"questions-raised-about-coverage-of-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rescuejapan.jp\/_wp\/?p=2469","title":{"rendered":"Questions Raised About Coverage of Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A front-page headline in <em>The Chicago Sun-Times<\/em><span> provoked debate after Saturday\u2019s Asiana airline tragedy in San Francisco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\/2013\/07\/questions-raised-about-coverage-of-disaster\/chicago-sun-times\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-95551\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-95551\" title=\"chicago sun-times\" src=\"http:\/\/rescuejapan.jp\/_wp\/wp-content\/plugins\/rss-poster\/cache\/a8174_chicago-sun-times-300x272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a>Some who saw the tabloid\u2019s cover took offense, contending that the headline \u2013\u201cFright 214\u201d \u2014 perpetuated the oft-used stereotype of an Asian accent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile we at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaja.org\">Asian American Journalists Association<\/a> are willing to give <em>The Sun-Times<\/em><span> the benefit of the doubt, the headline used to accompany the paper\u2019s coverage was certainly unfortunate,\u201d said Bobby Caina Calvan, chair of AAJA MediaWatch. \u201cAn editor should have caught the racially tinged wording.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a brief telephone conversation on Sunday, <em>Sun-Times<\/em><span> Publisher\/Editor-in-Chief Jim Kirk said it didn\u2019t dawn on his editors that the play on words could be construed as offensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere was nothing intentional on our part to play off any stereotypes. \u2026 If anybody was offended by that, we are sorry,\u201d Kirk added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe were trying to convey the obviously frightening situation of that landing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile some might not be satisfied with Kirk\u2019s response, we appreciate his quickness in responding to MediaWatch\u2019s request for an explanation and for engaging in a conversation about fair and accurate coverage of our communities,\u201d said Calvan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf <em>The Sun-Times\u2019<\/em><span> copy desk is like many others in newsrooms across the nation, it probably lacked the diversity of voices on staff that might have questioned the appropriateness of the headline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Similar questions were raised when ESPN used the term \u201cchink in the armor\u201d in a headline about NBA player Jeremy Lin. Some said it was racially tinged while others said it was an innocent mistake since the phrase itself is not a slur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rafu.com\/2013\/07\/questions-raised-about-coverage-of-disaster\/asianarecisttweets\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-95554\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-95554\" title=\"asianarecisttweets\" src=\"http:\/\/rescuejapan.jp\/_wp\/wp-content\/plugins\/rss-poster\/cache\/a8174_asianarecisttweets-282x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Some postings on Twitter in response to the Asiana crash have been openly racist, playing on the stereotype of Asians as bad drivers. One said, \u201cOf course the Korean plane crashed. Asians can\u2019t drive, what makes them think they can fly a plane.\u201d Another said, \u201cDamn chinks need to open their eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkeiview.com\/blog\/\">Nikkei View<\/a> blogger Gil Asakawa wrote, \u201cI shouldn\u2019t be surprised or disappointed anymore, and accept the fact that there will always be idiotic people in the United States who probably function perfectly normally most of the time, and then turn into stupid racist haters the moment there\u2019s some sort of tragedy in the world that involves people of color. Two years ago, I was dumbfounded that Americans would rant and rave about the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan and claim it was somehow \u2018God\u2019s revenge\u2019 for Pearl Harbor. What? \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHere I\u2019ve been following the crash of the Asiana jetliner at SFO (an airport I often fly to and from) as a human tragedy, but a miracle with only two casualties. I\u2019ve felt empathy for the families of the two schoolgirls who were killed, and the many survivors who were injured. But the fact that most of those onboard survived \u2014 and that 123 survivors were able to walk away without being hospitalized \u2014 is nothing short of amazing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut of course, the human stories of the crash don\u2019t matter to the racists who immediately feel the need to respond with jokes about Asian stereotypes (we\u2019re lousy drivers, har har) and hateful cracks about North Korea (hellooo, Seoul is in South Korea, and this was not an attack by Kim Jong Un on the U.S.).
