MEMO-040111-A<\/strong><\/p>\n

Report on Iwate Pref.<\/p>\n

372 shelters with 43,000 people total in Iwate.<\/p>\n

Some of the most hard-hit areas are in Iwate, and I tried calling more than 30 shelters, but all shelters along the coast region are unaccessible by phone.\u00a0 I got to talk to a couple of ladies in the inner land region, but they said they are basically doing fine and have enough (more than enough almost) things being brought in.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the costal areas seem to still be very much isolated and with very little food, judging from what bits and pieces of information I picked up from twitter, blogs, iwate posts, google personfinder ppl’s information etc.<\/p>\n

I have found that Miyako City is especially in need of help probably because their phone lines are down, they are in Iwate (up further north from Miyagi, and Miyako City is rather up north within Iwate), and\u00a0so are\u00a0relatively unaccessible (to\u00a0show this, the list of people that are in the\u00a0shelters in this are very very short compared to the actual number of people that is supposed\u00a0to be\u00a0there).\u00a0\u00a0 They\u00a0seem to still have no water,\u00a0power, or gas.\u00a0 Miyako City has 4,500 people in shelters.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Miyako\u00a0is managing to send out a fax asking for help to bring food\u00a0and goods to them.\u00a0 Miyako is sending out the most number of faxes asking for help.<\/p>\n

The mayor, as of\u00a0today, is asking for:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0Clothing (underwear), socks<\/p>\n

– Toilet paper<\/p>\n

– Canned foods<\/p>\n

– Cup ramen, instant soups and miso soups<\/p>\n

– Vegetables<\/p>\n

– Soap, detergent<\/p>\n

– Adult nappies, urine pads<\/p>\n

– Hokkairos (hot kairo)<\/p>\n

– \u00a0Work gloves, rubber gloves<\/p>\n

– Sanitary napkins, tampons<\/p>\n

– Hand lotions<\/p>\n

– Styrofoam plates and bowls<\/p>\n

While the other districts are starting to ask for more non-basic things (like shovels), Miyako is still asking for the very basic things, and Iwate pref gov. admits that they haven’t been able to deliver to some areas.<\/p>\n

So I really think we need to help Miyako City… the problem is that there is almost no way to contact them.\u00a0 But we know they are out there…<\/p>\n

I do have\u00a0a fairly accurate map of all the shelters in Miyako City, and about\u00a0how many people are in each.\u00a0 They are all fairly close to each other,\u00a0except for the peninsula portion.\u00a0 I also have a map to show accessible roads.\u00a0 Currently though, they are in the process of integrating 45 of their shelters into 18.\u00a0 I am now\u00a0following the google personfinder blog where they are exchanging information about the move, and I think I can specify some of the shelters where there will be a lot of people.\u00a0 (I already have one –<\/p>\n
